Senior Internship Program
About the Program
The senior internship program is a second semester senior option available to all seniors in good academic standing. The program empowers students to take ownership of their education by pursuing an internship in a special area of interest. The experience enables students to develop specific skills and knowledge beyond the traditional classroom.
Students are guided throughout the process by a coordinator and a high school faculty mentor of their choosing. Monthly meetings, workshops and presentations are scheduled during the school year to assist students in securing an internship and completing the program requirements.
Generally, students begin their internship in May. The program is designed to accommodate each individual student schedule, so the start date will vary from student-to-student depending on their final and AP exam schedule. After a student has taken all his/her exams, the internship period begins.
Once the internship starts, students are expected to maintain a daily journal and schedule weekly meetings with their mentor. The mentor plays a critical role in the program, editing student journal entries, overseeing their progress, and assisting students with program requirements. Their high school mentor will be in communication with the internship sponsor to check on student progress throughout the internship. Interns will be required to submit a formal journal, poster and give a PowerPoint presentation upon completion of their internship. Students are eligible to earn one elective credit upon completion of all program requirements with a positive evaluation from both their sponsor and mentor.
Seniors interested in the program are encouraged to start their search for an internship as soon as possible. While students should take an active role in securing an internship, Mrs. Comblo, program coordinator, is available to assist students with the process.
The internship program has grown exponentially over the years. Its success is due to the collaboration of dedicated faculty mentors, supportive sponsors and motivated seniors. The personal growth demonstrated by the seniors enrolled in the program underscores the educational value of an internship program.
