Now more than ever we are seeing the effects of social distancing in our world: there is less air pollution, the animals are out and about in many places and there is less food waste since more people are eating at home. Students in Dorene Tomaskovic’s first grade class have recently been learning about the three R’s and many created Earth Day-related projects at home.
The three R’s are reduce, reuse, recycle. The students first watched a video in honor of Earth Day showing how professional artists made objects using recycled materials. Those objects are currently on display in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.
As an optional remote learning activity, many students took the challenge of creating something by recycling and reusing materials that they had at home and usually would have thrown out.
Ms. Tomaskovic thought this was a wonderful way to learn by exploration, critical thinking and creativity.
“These students were amazingly creative using recycled and reused household materials,” she said. “They were inspired, motivated and resourceful!”
