Briarcliff Middle School Welcomes Sixth Graders

So long fifth grade, hello sixth grade!

Students in Briarcliff's sixth grade arrived this morning to their orientation. They were greeted by Nurse Laura Jagielski who checked their temperature and made sure everyone was keeping their distance.

“I’m very excited about opening. We worked very hard over the summer on the re-opening plan,” said Ms. Jagielski, as she was checking temperatures with a forehead thermometer. “It’s just so nice to see students and I’m confident that we will be able to manage the daily activities at the school. I’m really looking forward to it!”

It’s not always easy making sure students practice social distancing but Ms. Jagielski has a plan.

“My motto is the three W’s: Wash your hands. Wear a mask. Watch your distance. Watching your distance is the hardest part, especially for kids. I have three kids, I get it,” she said.

To assist with managing protocols, this year the nurse’s office has extra help.

“Temporarily we have an LPN (licensed practical nurse) for both buildings, to help as we go through this challenge,” Ms. Jagielski said.

Extra help for the nurse is not the only addition at Briarcliff Middle School. The district has hired additional teaching assistants as well.

“The students are supported by the general education teacher, the special education teacher or a teaching assistant,” said Briarcliff Middle School Assistant Principal Amy Gladstone. “There are 83 students in the sixth grade with one teacher per subject so adding teaching assistants allows us to split the students into groups of 10-12,” she added.

Seventh grade orientation will be on Wednesday and eighth grade will take place on Thursday, with Friday being the first full day of school. In the meantime, the sixth graders spent the morning getting acclimated to their new school.

“The students did a variety of activities, such as “getting to know you” activities and they met their world language teachers. Briarcliff Middle School Principal Ms. Howard and I had a virtual meeting with them where we discussed certain issues, such as security procedures. "
