Pep rallies outdoors? Why not! The Briarcliff High School student body and faculty gathered at the stadium field outside the high school for an event that has been more than a year in the making: a good old fashioned pep rally.
The pep rally began with senior Tyler Amsterdam singing the National Anthem. The Dance Team performed, as did the Cheer Team. Next there was a relay race, and then all of the team captains were introduced.
The pie-eating contest was short and sweet – no pun intended; senior David Hao was first to find the gummy bear in the whipped cream pie and won the contest.
The highlight of the pep rally was several rounds of Speedball. This is a game which is a mix of football and soccer. In the game you throw the ball, like in a football game, but if it is on the ground you have to kick it. The first round was freshmen against seniors. Freshmen won and moved onto the next round, where they played against the juniors who had beaten the sophomores. The score was 0-0 so the game went to a shootout and the freshmen ended up winning 3-2.
“Today’s pep rally was an incredible showing of our students’ school spirit,” said Principal Diana Blank. “Being outside on our game-day field, enjoying the fresh air and our beautiful facilities was awesome. I think we may have a new tradition in the works.”
