Requests for Private School Transportation

All Briarcliff School District residents are reminded that requests are transportation to private schools must be scanned and submitted, via email, to

no later than April 1, 2025 for the 2025-2026 school year. Even if your child is currently being transported to a private school, you must submit a new request every year.

After April 1, only residents new to school district may apply for out-of-district transportation.  Requests must be received within the first 30 days of residence.  Dated proof of residence will be required.

• Please use a small backpack or book bag. Choose a backpack that is a bright color or has reflective material so you are visible at the bus stop and while walking. Do not hang keys or toys from your backpack.
• Loose papers or other items are dangerous if they drop as you get on or off the bus or walk to school. Remember: The bus is big, a child is small; if you've dropped your things, then let them fall; just let them lay, 'till the bus is far away.
• Check your clothing and remove any dangling drawstrings or other items that could get caught in the bus door. Make sure your shoes are tied.
• Be at your bus stop early. Lateness may cause you to run. NEVER PANIC AND RUN TO THE BUS! Never walk in the middle of the roadway to your bus stop. If your road does not have sidewalks, walk by the curb on the left side of the road. Ask your parent to show you the safest path.
• Wait at your stop in an orderly fashion. Playing or fooling around at the bus stop can be dangerous because you are not paying attention to the surrounding roadways.
• When you see the bus arriving, wait for the bus driver's signal and enter the bus single file, in a courteous manner. If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk to a point 10 feet (or five giant steps) ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure the bus driver can see you and you can see the driver. Wait for his/her signal before you cross. NEVER WALK BEHIND THE BUS!
• Use your seat belt and sit quietly while you are on the bus. Behavior problems could distract the bus driver. Never put your hands, arms, or head out the window; never throw anything from the window. Keep the aisles clear. Know the location of the emergency exit door.
• When you exit, look to the rear of the bus and check to be sure the "coast is clear" of traffic, bikes, etc., before you step off the bottom step.
• Immediately move away from the bus and the bus stop. Do not linger by the roadway.

Be aware of the bus pick up and drop off times in your neighborhood. Watch out for children waiting at the bus stop and walking on the road. Please drive with extreme caution and while backing out of the driveway or garage. If you see the bus slowing down to stop at pick up time, you may be running late and try to "beat the bus" before it stops, be aware that a student might also be running late and dart into the road from any direction with his eyes only on the bus, not the traffic. Buses run on the same schedule every day, time your morning commute to avoid getting behind a bus that must make multiple stops when you are in a hurry.

Show courtesy to your neighbors. If you drive your child to the bus stop, park in an orderly manner. Be aware of your neighbor's property. Have your children exit the car slowly and proceed to the designated stop before the bus arrives to avoid running to the bus as it comes to a stop. This will also enable orderly and timely bus loading.

It's the Law!

• Drivers must stop when school bus red lights are flashing.
• Even on divided or multi-lane highways and school grounds, drivers must stop for flashing red lights. All vehicles, including other school buses, police, and ambulances must stop whenever meeting any school bus with its red lights flashing.
• Penalties for illegally passing a school bus range from $150-$850 fines, points on your license, and/or possible imprisonment.
• Yellow flashing lights are activated by the school bus driver to warn other motorists that the bus will be stopping. This is not a requirement for you to stop, it is a warning that the bus is approaching a stop.
• School bus drivers in New York State are required by law to use the red flashing lights when loading and unloading passengers, wherever and whenever that may be. If the children have to cross the road, the driver will signal them when it is safe to cross.
• If the bus does not move right away it usually means there is a disruption on the bus or outside the bus. Please be patient and do not move your vehicle until the red lights are no longer flashing.
• School bus drivers are highly trained professionals, requiring specialized licensing, annual physicals, and intensive classroom instruction on bus safety.
• School bus transportation is the safest form of transportation and our buses meet the most stringent safety standards of any state in the country. Motorists who do not stop for school buses are the second leading cause of school bus fatalities in New York State. Don't become a statistic, please be cautious around school buses.
