Absences may be entered in half day or full day increments ONLY.
Personal Illness
Personal illness days are provided to support employees during times of illness, such as the flu, a cold, strep throat, or similar illnesses. These days are not intended for use as personal time, vacation, travel, or to address personal needs, and should not be considered “your time” to use at an employee’s discretion for non-medical purposes. Employees are expected to use sick days responsibly and only when genuinely necessary for health-related reasons. Misuse of sick leave may be subject to review and could result in corrective action.
Employees who need to utilize multiple personal illness days at a time should communicate with both their supervisor and the Director of Human Resources to ensure appropriate staffing coverage, support continuity of operations, and allow for proper coordination and documentation of leave.
Family Illness
May be used when an employee must be absent because the illness of a child, spouse, parent, or a relative who resides in the home necessitates the absence of such employee.
Personal Days
Used to conduct personal business which cannot be conducted outside of the workday.
BTA members may take up to two (2) personal leave days without a reason. The remaining three (3) days shall require the submission of a reason (in Frontline Absence Management). This reason must be clear and specific.
Personal days will not be granted to BTA members on the day before or after a school holiday or recess period without prior approval by the Superintendent. BTA members seeking approval, must complete the Personal Day Request (BTA) Prior/Post Holiday - Unique exceptions form on Frontline Central. Requesting the day does not guarantee approval.

Bereavement
Used for arrangements or travel when a member of an employee’s immediate family dies, up to five (5) days.
Vacation
Non-instructional and/or 12-month staff may use vacation days as designated in the applicable salary agreements or collective bargaining contracts. However, in all cases, requests to utilize accrued vacation time must be approved by a supervising administrator.
Excessive Absenteeism
While employees are granted a designated number of absence days each year, excessive absenteeism may impact the District's ability to maintain continuity of operations and student services.
For 10-month employees, the use of more than 10 absence days in a school year is considered excessive absenteeism. For 12-month employees, the use of more than 13 absence days in a fiscal year is considered excessive absenteeism. Approved vacation days for 12-month employees and absences designated under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) are not included in the calculation of excessive absenteeism.
Employees whose absences exceed these thresholds may be required to meet with their supervisor to discuss attendance patterns and determine whether additional support or intervention is appropriate.
