Briarcliff Benefits

You have 30 days from your hire date to enroll in any plan, and your coverage will become effective on the 1st day of the month following your hire date. If you do not enroll at the time of hire, you must wait for the next open enrollment period in the spring.  

All employees were provided with an enrollment form at the time of hire. If you need an enrollment form or have any questions about benefits, please contact the Benefits Coordinator. 

Certain life events allow you to make changes to your health insurance coverage outside of the open enrollment period. These qualifying events include: 

• Marriage or divorce 

• Birth or adoption of a child 

• Loss of other health insurance coverage 

• Significant change in employment status (such as a job loss) 

• Death of a spouse or dependent 

• Change in residence that affects your health plan coverage 

• Becoming eligible for Medicare or Medicaid 

You can add a new spouse within 30 days of your marriage or a new child within 60 days of a qualifying event. 

Once you enroll in a benefit plan, you have certain responsibilities: 

• Verify the accuracy of your enrollment and employee contribution amounts. 

• Inform the Benefits Coordinator of any coverage or address changes. 

All changes to your healthcare plan, such as open enrollment, dependent coverage changes, and COBRA, will be addressed directly with Benetech.  

Ten-Month Employee  

If a ten-month employee does not return to Briarcliff in September, their coverage will be terminated, and they will be responsible for any claims incurred during the months of July and August.  Employees can instead choose to make a payment of the full premium to the District, per month for July and August to cover those claims. 

 It is the employee’s responsibility to know and understand the financial responsibilities for health and dental premiums upon resignation. 

Dependents are no longer eligible upon their 26th birthday. Coverage will continue through the end of the month in which they turn 26.

COBRA (Continuation of Health Insurance Coverage)  

You and your eligible dependents have the right to elect to continue your medical and dental coverage if you lose these benefits under certain circumstances. This right is guaranteed under federal law. To continue coverage, you must pay the total premium for the plan plus a 2% administrative fee.  If you are eligible for COBRA, you will receive notice from the PNW BOCES Health Benefits Consortium (health) or Guardian (dental)with COBRA enrollment forms and next steps.
