Philosophy
The World Language Department of the Briarcliff Manor School District is committed to preparing our students for today’s increasingly global society. It is essential to be able to communicate in more than one language as well as to develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. To achieve this goal, our language courses focus on the four essential skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Common Core standards are integrated into our curriculum through the utilization of authentic sources and technology in order to enable the success of our students across all disciplines.
Our World Language Program provides the opportunity for students to select the study of French or Spanish beginning in the 6th grade. The Briarcliff High School Program continues these sequences with a variety of courses for students of all abilities and interests. In addition, we offer a full sequence in Latin and courses in conversational Mandarin Chinese. We prepare students to become life-long language learners and to be able to compete in the 21st Century in the United States and abroad.
