March 2019

Dear Parents:

The success and participation of the Senior Internship Program, under the superb direction of Mrs. Comblo, has become an integral component of the BHS senior experience.  While plans for internships are still in the process of being arranged, most of our seniors who have elected to participate in the program have secured a senior internship opportunity.

I would like to clarify the expectations of our senior interns regarding attendance in classes and academic responsibilities.

Students must be in good academic standing to be certain of participating in the Briarcliff High School Senior Internship Program.  The New York State Department of Education defines a student in good academic standing as one who pursues the program of study in which he/she is enrolled and makes satisfactory academic progress toward the completion of his/her program and NYS graduation requirements.  Essentially, students must maintain a consistent level of progress in all classes as demonstrated throughout the year.  Please note:  All four years of the 8 hours per year community service obligation must be completed as it is a BHS graduation requirement.  Students will not be permitted to leave on senior internships if their community service responsibility is incomplete.  Please contact Ms. Guida at dguida@briarcliffschools.org with questions or concerns.  Community Service forms are located under Forms, HS Forms on the website. All forms are due by 3:00 pm on April 15th.

The Senior Internship experience time frame is May 6th through June 14th (students may remain longer if they choose).  The last day of classes for senior interns not sitting for an AP, UHS, ECE or SUPA exam will be Friday, May 3rd.  However, senior interns who are AP, UHS, ECE, SUPA students must attend only their AP, UHS, ECE, SUPA classes until their last AP, UHS, ECE, SUPA examination is completed.  Students sitting for AP, UHS, ECE, SUPA exams in the morning are excused from afternoon AP, UHS, ECE, SUPA classes and vice versa.  The schedule for AP/College Course examinations beginning May 6th through May 17th may be accessed via the BHS homepage/School Information section under School Communications, Important Information (www.briarcliffschoools.org).

·       Third quarter progress report period for seniors ended on Friday, March 14th.  Comments have been posted for seniors to the parent portal.

·       Third quarter will officially end for seniors on Friday, May 3rd.  Third quarter grades for seniors will be posted to the parent portal by Friday, May 10th.

·       Senior interns will not have "final" projects, exams or any cumulative assessments that would serve in lieu of end of the year assessments unless they are sitting for an AP, UHS, ECE, or SUPA examination.

·       SI (Senior Internship) will be entered for each student for attendance purposes.

·       Teachers will enter SI (Senior Internship) for fourth quarter progress reports as well as fourth quarter grade reporting.

·       Please review the Senior Internship informational documents that have been discussed with the prospective senior interns.  These documents can be found via the Senior Internship Program link under Student Life on the website.

·       All senior interns must attend the following meetings as listed on the calendar:

April 17th         Presentation/Poster Workshop

May 29th          Model Presentation

We look forward to the Senior Internship presentations in June.  Our students amaze us with their interests, talents, efforts and maturity.  In fact, some students are hardly recognizable as the people we thought we knew and have secured summer employment opportunities due to their internships.  Allowing seniors to apply themselves in the real world with the support of teachers and staff is an invaluable experience.

If you have any questions or are still looking for an internship opportunity, kindly contact Mrs. Sharon Comblo at 914-769-6299 Ext. 8337/email scomblo@briarcliffschools.org.

Sincerely,

Debora French, Principal
