Dear Parents:

Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year.  Therefore, I just wanted to be clear about an important issue.

ยท       Students should be conscious of the dress code when selecting costumes.

More importantly, I am asking that parents help Briarcliff High School send an unambiguous message stating that responsible young men and women should be careful of the messages they may send through their attire and honor the dignity and sensitivities of others as well as a mindfulness that we share our campus with young, impressionable middle school students.   Kindly talk to your son or daughter about his/her plans for Halloween attire as well as the daily selection of apparel that he/she has chosen to wear to school.  Please be aware that attire which is a distraction to the educational process, inappropriately suggestive or revealing, lewd, vulgar, indecent or disparages any particular group, explicitly or implicitly, is unacceptable. Costume paraphernalia, i.e. swords, toy weapons, etc. may not be brought to school. If a student dresses in such a way, he or she will be asked to change the attire.  If the student does not have appropriate attire in which to change, his or her parents will be contacted, and arrangements will be made to send the student home.

The following information is applicable every school day and appears on Pages 9-10 of the District Code of Conduct booklet, revised and adopted in August 2017.  Each student at BHS was issued and signed for a Code of Conduct book during the first week of classes.  A student's dress, grooming and appearance shall:

1.     Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the education process.

2.     Recognize that extremely short, revealing or see-through garments such as tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines and waistlines, pants worn low and short shorts are not appropriate.

3.     Ensure that undergarments are completely covered with outer clothing.

4.     Include footwear at all times.

5.     Clothing cannot include items that are vulgar, obscene, and libelous or denigrate others on account of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

6.     Clothing cannot promote, endorse, threaten or encourage illegal or violent activities.

I have also attached a Halloween advisory flyer prepared by the Westchester Coalition for Drug and Alcohol Free Youth via PowerToTheParent.org as well as an article from the September 26th edition of the Journal News which contains important information for parents. Thank you for your support in making Briarcliff High School a safe, positive and enjoyable place to learn.

Sincerely,

Debora French
Principal
