Dear Parents,
Congratulations, you've survived week three of distance learning! It's incredible to think about all we've accomplished together to reimagine what teaching looks like from a distance and what would even be possible for students to learn and do at home. Our teachers have crafted high quality learning experiences while remaining dedicated to the social emotional and academic needs of our students and families. You have shown such amazing support of your children's learning through your dedication, time and attention. Thank you for your partnership, we can't do this without you.
As stated in Mr. Torosian's and Dr. Kaishian's April 3, 2020 letter, distance learning will continue April 6th- 13th as directed by Governor Cuomo's Executive Order. On Monday through Wednesday, students will be expected to participate in the learning process. On Thursday and Friday, out of respect for those observing religious holidays, students and staff will be asked to participate to the extent that their family religious obligations allow.
This week, our Encore teachers will start posting activities, lessons, and workshops in Teams, in addition to providing the Encore Activity Grid. Look for more information about how and where to access this information from the Encore teachers early in the week. This week, in an effort to make connections with every child, you will be receiving a short message and read aloud each morning via this email address. I hope your children enjoy the stories.
As a quick reminder, please make sure that your children are not in bed or eating breakfast during their live streaming sessions. Engaging children in the educational process is more successful when they are sitting at a table or desk, with their materials, ready to learn. Lastly, we are asking that you not record the live sessions due to privacy issues for the children and adults appearing in the video. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher. Thank you for adhering to these guidelines.
Some questions you've been asking this week:
When will school reopen?
It goes without saying, that I hope it is sooner rather than later. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say, we can't wait to get back to normal. Reopening the schools is not a decision made at the district level. This directive will come from the State Department of Education and Governor Cuomo. I watch the Governor's daily briefings, just like all of you to get the latest updates!
Will field trips and activities be rescheduled?
Mrs. Foley and I met with Cara Katz and Stephanie Conover on Friday to review the remaining activities for the year and brainstorm possible ideas moving forward. As with this entire unprecedented situation, I wish that I had a crystal ball and could predict what the future will bring. While we regret the disappointment cancellations will cause and the impact it will have on all the K-12 children and staff, we must place the health and safety of our communities first when making decisions. Currently, we are looking at trips and making decisions in two-week increments.
Finally, we would like to urge students and families to remember that the goal of the school closure is to achieve social distancing and flatten the curve! Please support recommended public health measures by practicing social distancing, washing your hands and wearing a mask when appropriate. We know this isn't easy for everyone, but we must prioritize the importance of the larger goal.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with your questions, concerns or ideas. Together we're stronger!
Regards,
Colleen O'Neill-Mangan
