SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAM SURVEY – 6TH GRADE PARENTS ONLY

Dear Parents,

As you know, Briarcliff Middle School provides a hot lunch program for students. Schools that provide such an option must abide by certain state and federal regulations in order to obtain the commodities that subsidize the program.

Even though our program is provided by a service, Aramark, we must adhere to regulations. One of the provisions in the law is a requirement that schools offering a hot lunch program must also make a breakfast available. The breakfast meal would consist of a least ½ pint of milk, ½ cup of fruit or full strength fruit or vegetable juice and two servings from one of the following components or one serving from each: 1 serving of whole grain or enriched bread or cereal; 1 ounce serving of protein. Participation by a child in the School Breakfast program is not mandatory. It would, however, have to be available for all children in the school. The full price for a breakfast meal will be $1.75. A child eligible for free or reduced price meals in the school lunch program would be eligible for free or reduced price breakfast meals as well.

We will be required to offer breakfast if we provide a lunch program unless 80% of our students will not participate in the breakfast offering. We, therefore, are requesting that you provide the information needed in order to consider this matter. Your thoughts as a parent about this proposal are important to the process. In order for us to comply with NY State regulations it is very important that each 6th grade family complete the Parent Survey form.

Thank you, Karen McKeon
